The story goes that when God made the earth, he distributed pieces of land to the different populations. But he could not find the Georgians.
After scanning the surface of the earth he found them in the middle of a week-long food and wine feast (Supra), toasting, singing and dancing. Unfortunately God had already distributed all plots of land, but found Georgians so nice and hospitable that he decided to give them the nicest, most beautiful and fertile piece on earth, one he had kept for himself.
Georgia is a stunningly beautiful country with one of the most welcoming people on earth, that love nature, and love to eat and drink. They also make delicious natural wines, using unique grape varieties and old maceration techniques, with skin contact or without.
Donkey Wines’ intention is to provide you a window into the unique world of natural Georgian wines, with its different grape varieties, maceration techniques and ageing processes. Having lived for three years and travelled extensively in Georgia, we’ve gotten to know some great winemakers, who cultivate a deep respect for nature, the terroir and traditional winegrowing, and who seek authenticity rather than profit.
All our wines are aged in clay vessels, also known as Qvevris, that sit underground and give a deep. This opens up a new world for amateurs of living, natural wines that come straight from the womb of the earth, with minimal human intervention and no additives or pesticides.
When you discover Georgia you are struck by the country’s beauty, the delicious food and the generosity of its inhabitants. Georgian wines are the same: unique, beautiful and delicisously generous. So take to leap and discover a new world multi-coloured wineworld!
